Adar Poonawalla’s Career
Adar Poonawalla joined Serum Institute of India in 2001 after completing his graduate degree from the University of Westminster, London.
Adar focused on the International market and started getting new drugs licence. His company was prequalified by WHO for the supply to the UN Agencies like UNICEF AND PAHO etc.
He made strategies to export foreign countries and began exporting its drugs and other products to 35 countries. In the year 2015, its client countries increased up to 140 countries where it got 85 percent of its revenues from these foreign countries.
He was appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Serum Institute of India with full control over all of its business in 2011. He was a key person in acquiring Bilthoven Biologicals, a Netherland government's vaccine manufacturing company.
He is also credited for initiated and launching Serum Institute’s oral polio vaccine in 2014, which later on became the bestseller vaccine for the company.
In 2016, the Economic Times selected him as a "business leader" under the age of 40.
He also secured a place in the list prepared by GQ magazine as one of the 50 most influential young Indians and was honored with the philanthropist award of the year 2016.
He launched www.adarpcleancity.com website which was an initiative to keep Pune city clean and green.
Under this campaign, he funded 20 million dollars to clean up the city of Pune using trucks, glutton machines, and bins. All these initiatives were done under his leadership with a dedicated and devoted team.
Poonawalla founded an NGO the Villoo Poonawalla Foundation, in memory of his late mother Mrs. Villoo Poonawalla. This foundation today runs 1 hospital, 6 schools, 25 water plants at different locations.
It also has 250 trucks and machinery picking up and processing waste in and around the city of Pune.
